Larry Joe Tutson Jr. lost his life while helping a dear friend. Amongst her grief, Mrs. Smith wanted to continue the loving and giving spirit of her son, which led to the Smiths starting this foundation. With the help of friends, they began an annual Christmas toy drive for disadvantaged families in South Dallas. 2024 will be the 22nd year that they have provided holiday cheer to 500 children.
We are a nonprofit organization built of volunteers with the same shared goal; to help children and others in need. It takes a village to raise a child, so we work as members to these villages and serve them. We do this through awarding academic scholarships, an annual toy drive, donating school supplies, etc. We also provide assistance to elderly and low income families in efforts to support our mission.
Our vision is to continue to do our due diligence for the youth and people of our community through positive impact and assistance. We desire to see a future where each child is afforded the opportunity and resources to achieve their dreams. We have more things to come to further our vision.
KNON Station Manager Dave Chaos sat down with Gregg and Barbara Smith for a heartfelt podcast interview. They shared the story of their son, Larry Tutson Jr., who tragically lost his life while selflessly helping a dear friend. Despite their grief, Mrs. Smith was inspired to honor her son's loving and giving spirit, which led the Smith family to establish a foundation in his memory. With the support of friends, the Smiths launched an annual Christmas toy drive to benefit disadvantaged families in South Dallas. Toys are collected at the KNON Toy Drive and given away on the Saturday before Christmas at R.L.'s Blues Palace on Al Lipscomb way in the heart of the South Dallas neighborhood. In 2022, this remarkable initiative marked its 20th year, bringing holiday joy to 500 children and continuing Larry Joe's legacy of kindness and compassion.
The video above is a Fox 4 segment on our foundation that dives deeper into the story of our son and shows our work in action.
